Geely, the massive Chinese automotive group that owns a portfolio of brands including Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and Zeekr, has made its much-anticipated official entry into the Australian market. Leading the charge is the Geely EX5, a mid-size electric SUV designed to go head-to-head with the segment’s heavy hitters, most notably the Tesla Model Y.

What’s immediately catching the attention of Australian buyers is the incredibly competitive pricing. With a starting price below $50,000 for the entry-level variant, the EX5 is positioned to be a significant disruptor, making electric SUV ownership more accessible than ever before. This aggressive pricing strategy, combined with a comprehensive list of standard features, is a clear signal of Geely’s ambition.

The EX5 is available in two front-wheel-drive variants: the Complete and the higher-spec Inspire. Both models share a 60.22 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery and a single front-mounted electric motor that produces 160 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. The Complete model, with its lighter build, offers a WLTP driving range of up to 430 km, while the Inspire variant, with more equipment, achieves a still-respectable 410 km. Both models support DC fast charging up to 100 kW, allowing for a 30-80% charge in a quick 20 minutes.

Where the EX5 truly stands out is in its cabin. Geely has focused on creating a premium, tech-rich interior that belies its price point. The Inspire variant, for example, is equipped with features you’d expect on a much more expensive car, including a 16-speaker, 1000W premium sound system, a 13.4-inch head-up display, and front seats with ventilation and a six-mode massage function.

The EX5 also comes with a strong ownership package, including a 7-year/unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, an 8-year/unlimited-kilometre battery warranty, and up to seven years of roadside assist. With its sharp pricing, long list of inclusions, and impressive technology, the Geely EX5 is set to be a game-changer in the Australian EV landscape.
