MG Motor has officially launched its premium electric vehicle brand, IM (Intelligence in Motion), in Australia, with the highly anticipated IM5 sedan leading the charge. IM is a joint venture between MG’s parent company SAIC Motor, and Chinese technology giants Zhangjiang Hi-Tech and Alibaba Group, giving it a strong foundation in both automotive and cutting-edge technology. The IM5 is a direct competitor to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, offering a larger size and a huge list of features at a very competitive price point.

The MG Australia website’s configurator for the IM5 is now live, with the first deliveries estimated to arrive in late Q3 or early Q4 2025. This is a significant moment for the brand, as it positions itself as a serious contender in the premium EV space.

The IM5 sedan is available in three variants, all of which are equipped with advanced features. A notable highlight across the range is the standard four-wheel steering, which dramatically improves the car’s agility and reduces its turning circle, making it feel more like a smaller car in urban environments.

• The entry-level Premium variant is a rear-wheel-drive model with a 75 kWh battery, offering a generous WLTP driving range of up to 450 km. With a 217 kW motor, it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
• The mid-spec Platinum variant uses a larger 100 kWh battery and a more powerful 300 kW motor, also in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. This boosts the WLTP range to an impressive 655 km and drops the 0-100 km/h time to a swift 4.9 seconds.
• At the top of the range is the all-wheel-drive Performance variant. This is where the IM5 truly earns its “Hyper-EV” credentials. With a colossal 572 kW of power from its dual-motor setup and a 100 kWh battery, it can rocket from 0-100 km/h in a mind-bending 3.2 seconds.

The IM5’s appeal extends beyond its performance. All variants feature a luxurious and tech-filled interior, with a standard 26.3-inch widescreen display and a separate 10.5-inch touchscreen. Other standard features include a panoramic roof, a 20-speaker sound system, and a comprehensive suite of AI-assisted Level 2+ driver-assistance systems. The Platinum and Performance variants are built on an advanced 800V architecture, enabling a massive DC fast-charging speed of up to 396 kW, which allows for a 30-80% charge in just over 15 minutes. This combination of luxury, technology, and exhilarating performance makes the IM5 a formidable new player in the Australian EV market.
