Smart has officially relaunched in Australia, moving beyond its previous identity as a maker of tiny city cars. The brand is now an all-electric venture, born from a 50:50 joint partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese automotive giant Geely. This new direction is embodied by the Smart #1, a premium compact urban SUV that’s now available for sale with first deliveries expected to arrive shortly.
The Smart #1 is built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, which also underpins popular EVs like the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X. This shared platform gives the #1 a solid foundation and access to advanced technology, but it retains a unique character with its clean, “Sensual Producty” design language penned by Mercedes-Benz.
The Australian lineup for the Smart #1 offers three variants, all of which are equipped with a 66 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese (NMC) battery pack.
- The Smart #1 Pro+ is the entry-level model. This rear-wheel-drive variant has a single electric motor producing 200 kW and 343 Nm of torque, which is enough to propel it from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. It has a WLTP driving range of 420 km.
- The Smart #1 Premium shares the same rear-wheel-drive powertrain as the Pro+ but adds a host of luxury features, including a 10-inch head-up display, a Beats sound system, and Matrix LED headlights. It also offers a slightly better WLTP range of 440 km, thanks to a more efficient heat pump and a faster 22 kW AC onboard charger.
- The high-performance hero of the range is the Smart #1 Brabus. This variant features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup that boosts the power to a massive 315 kW and 543 Nm of torque. This allows for a blistering 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds. Its WLTP range is 400 km.
All models feature a modern and spacious interior with a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 9.2-inch digital driver display, and a full suite of advanced safety features. With its competitive pricing and a range of choices from efficient urban cruiser to performance-focused hot hatch, the Smart #1 is a compelling new player in the Australian electric vehicle market.
