The Tesla Model Y continues to dominate the Australian electric vehicle market, holding the top spot as the country’s best-selling EV. Following a significant update for the 2025 model year, often referred to as “Juniper,” the Model Y now shares many of the same key improvements as its sedan sibling, the refreshed Model 3, but with the added practicality of an SUV body. This includes a sleek, new exterior design and a refined, quieter interior thanks to new acoustic glass and an updated suspension.
The interior of the new Model Y has also been upgraded with a new rear screen for passengers and ventilated front seats, but it retains a key difference from the Model 3: the indicator stalk remains on the steering column. However, the gear selector stalk has been removed, with gear selection now performed through a swipe action on the main central touchscreen, similar to the Model 3.
The Australian lineup for the updated Model Y consists of two main variants:
- The entry-level Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive has a WLTP range of 466 km and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds.
- The Model Y Long Range AWD has received a larger battery, now 84.85 kWh, which boosts its WLTP range to an impressive 600 km. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
Following the initial “Launch Series” of the updated Model Y, which has now sold out, regular production models are available to order. The previously offered Launch Series vehicles had special badges, lighting, and a vegan suede interior, and Long Range variants included an acceleration boost.
For those in the market for a pre-refresh Model Y, there are still significant deals to be had. Tesla is currently offering substantial discounts of up to $11,000 on pre-facelift Model Y Long Range AWD inventory vehicles. These discounts, combined with a potential trade-in bonus and other incentives for financing or leasing, make the outgoing model an excellent value proposition while stocks last.
Finally, for performance enthusiasts, a refreshed Model Y Performance is expected to return to the lineup later in 2025. It is anticipated to include all the new design and interior upgrades, along with a more powerful dual-motor powertrain for even quicker acceleration, further solidifying the Model Y’s dominance in the Australian EV market.
