After a long wait, Volkswagen’s ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs have finally landed in Australia, and the delay has worked in our favor. We’re receiving the significantly updated versions, which feature more powerful and efficient motors, improved range, and a revised interior that addresses some of the usability concerns of earlier models.
Both the ID.4 SUV and its coupé sibling, the ID.5, are built on the brand’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform. For the Australian market, the ID.4 is initially available in the rear-wheel-drive Pro variant, with a starting price of $59,990 plus on-road costs. This model is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 210 kW and 545 Nm of torque. Paired with a 77 kWh (usable) battery pack, it offers an impressive WLTP driving range of up to 544 km.
For those seeking more performance, the all-wheel-drive GTX variant of the ID.4 is set to join the lineup in July 2025. This model adds a second electric motor on the front axle for a combined output of 250 kW and 679 Nm of torque, which allows it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a brisk 5.4 seconds.
The interior of the updated ID.4 features a new 12.9-inch infotainment system with a more intuitive menu structure and improved functionality. Standard features on the Pro variant are extensive, including a panoramic glass roof, Matrix LED headlights, tri-zone climate control, and a full suite of safety and driver-assistance systems.
With orders now open and first deliveries expected to commence around mid-2025, the ID.4 is a serious new contender in the competitive mid-size electric SUV market, offering a compelling blend of range, performance, and features.
