Australia’s largest energy retailer is testing a future where your EV helps balance the grid—and your charging bill. Origin Energy, BYD and StarCharge are piloting vehicle-to-grid (V2G) with 50 participants. Each gets a BYD Atto 3, a StarCharge V2G Halo bi‑directional charger, and a dedicated energy tariff, in a package around AU$800/month.
The January start aims to learn how drivers charge and discharge V2G cars in real life, not a mass rollout yet.
V2G explained: your EV stores energy when it’s cheap or abundant and can feed power back to the grid during peak demand, boosting stability and possibly lowering charging costs.
