Electric vehicle sales in Australia are charging ahead in 2025, painting a promising picture for the country’s shift towards cleaner transport. The latest data from the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) reveals that more than 14,000 additional battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have been sold in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2024. This surge means that between January and June 2025, EVs have claimed over 12 per cent share of all new car sales, up significantly from 9.6 per cent last year.

June 2025 marked a new high, with electric vehicles making up almost 16 per cent of new car sales-an Australian record for monthly market share. The EVC attributes this strong uptake to a combination of government policies, incentives, and a growing public awareness of the environmental and financial benefits of going electric.

“The transition to electric vehicles is definitely picking up speed,” an EVC spokesperson said. “Federal support through the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard is playing a crucial role in expanding consumer choice and driving down prices. Australians from all walks of life are making the switch – tradies behind the wheel of utes, families in SUVs, suburban drivers in hatchbacks, and small businesses using electric vans.”

Currently, there are more than 350,000 EV owners on Australian roads, reflecting a broad and diverse range of users embracing electric driving. The trend indicates that once people make the leap towards electric vehicles, they typically stay with it, suggesting strong satisfaction and ongoing demand.

Despite this progress, experts emphasise the importance of maintaining momentum to ensure the transition continues on a clear upward trajectory. This means more investment in charging infrastructure, ongoing incentives to encourage consumers, and support for innovative technologies such as vehicle-to-grid systems that will help integrate EVs into Australia’s energy ecosystem.

The benefits of more electric vehicles on Australian roads extend beyond individual owners. Cleaner, quieter streets and improved air quality present advantages for entire communities, contributing to broader environmental protection goals.

With the right support and infrastructure in place, 2025 could well be remembered as a pivotal year in Australia’s drive towards a sustainable transport future, setting the stage for electric vehicles to become the new norm.
