Kia’s new EV3 has touched down in Australia, making its national debut at the Australian Open in Melbourne and slated to arrive in dealerships from around March. Full pricing and specifications will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but local indicators suggest the small all-electric SUV could start below $50,000 once the range is announced.

Kia Australia says the majority of buyers here are likely to opt for the larger 81.4 kWh battery, with a Standard Range model offered with a 58.3 kWh pack. Most variants will be single-motor, producing 150 kW and 283 Nm, while all-wheel drive will be available from launch. A sportier GT-Line – and a potential future GTR – will use dual motors to deliver markedly stronger performance and “hot hatch” levels of acceleration.

The EV3 runs on Hyundai Group’s e-GMP platform, shared with its larger siblings, though it adopts a 400-volt electrical architecture rather than the 800V systems used in some higher-end models. The 81.4 kWh battery supports DC fast charging up to 128 kW, with a 10-80 per cent top-up taking about 31 minutes – a competitive figure within the segment. Kia also includes Smart Regenerative System 3.0 and vehicle-to-load functionality, enhancing efficiency and utility for owners.

Range estimates position the Standard Range EV3 at roughly 430 km, while Long Range variants are expected to reach up to about 600 km between charges. Trim forecasts mirror Kia’s broader EV lineup and are expected to include Air Standard Range, Air Long Range, Earth Long Range and GT-Line Long Range.

Notably, Kia will initially sell the EV3 alongside the Niro EV and Niro Hybrid in Australia, even though the EV3 is expected to eventually supersede the Niro in the local line-up. For buyers seeking a compact, practical electric SUV with modern features and competitive range figures, the EV3 arrives as a compelling new option.

Conclusion

The EV3 positions Kia to strengthen its small-SUV EV offering in Australia, combining attractive range options, practical tech like V2L and regenerative braking, and the prospect of performance-focused dual-motor variants. With pricing likely to undercut some rivals and an expected March dealer roll-out, the EV3 could be a decisive addition to the growing mainstream EV market – particularly for buyers balancing range, value and everyday utility.
