The BYD Sealion 7 has officially arrived in Australia, positioning itself as a key player in the highly competitive mid-size electric SUV segment. It takes direct aim at rivals like the Tesla Model Y, boasting a combination of sharp pricing, a long list of standard inclusions, and a design that draws inspiration from the popular BYD Seal sedan.
The Sealion 7 is built on BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0, sharing its underpinnings with the Seal and incorporating BYD’s innovative Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology for enhanced safety and structural rigidity. It also features the brand’s signature Ocean Aesthetics design language, with a sleek, aerodynamic profile and a futuristic, premium-looking interior.
In Australia, the Sealion 7 is available in two variants, both equipped with a powerful 82 kWh usable Blade Battery. The entry-level Premium variant is a rear-wheel-drive model that delivers a respectable 230 kW and 380 Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds. It offers a strong WLTP driving range of 482 km, making it a compelling choice for both urban commuting and longer road trips.
For those who demand more exhilarating performance, the flagship Performance variant is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powerhouse. With a combined output of 390 kW and 690 Nm of torque, it can rocket from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 4.5 seconds. While this extra power comes with a slight trade-off in range, the Performance model still achieves a solid 456 km (WLTP). Both variants support DC fast charging up to 150 kW, allowing for a 10-80% charge in around 24 minutes.
The Sealion 7 is packed with premium features as standard, including a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a comprehensive suite of advanced safety features. It also includes V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) bi-directional charging, adding to its versatility.
