The legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class has embraced an all-electric future with the new G 580 with EQ Technology. This isn’t just an electric version of the G-Wagen; it’s a vehicle that takes the iconic off-road capability of the G-Class and elevates it to a new level, thanks to its groundbreaking electric powertrain.

The G 580 with EQ Technology is a powerhouse, equipped with four electric motors—one for each wheel. This innovative setup provides a combined output of 432 kW and a colossal 1164 Nm of torque, which is even more than the V8-powered AMG G 63. This immense power and instant torque delivery give it an almost unbelievable level of control and performance, both on and off the road.

This advanced technology also enables several “G-specific” features that are impossible in a traditional combustion engine vehicle. The most famous of these is the G-Turn, which allows the vehicle to rotate on the spot (up to 720 degrees) on loose surfaces, making it incredibly maneuverable in tight off-road situations. It also has G-Steering, which dramatically reduces the turning circle at low speeds. With a wading depth of 850mm and a “virtual” three-differential lock system managed by the four individual motors, the G 580 with EQ Technology is arguably the most capable G-Class ever built.

While its performance and technology are top-tier, so is its price. The G 580 with EQ Technology starts from $249,900 plus on-road costs in Australia, making it a significant investment. However, this price is still considerably less than the V8-powered AMG G 63. A limited-run “Edition One” is also available for a higher price, with exclusive cosmetic upgrades and features.

It’s also worth noting the vehicle’s long-winded name. This move away from the “EQG” moniker that was used for the concept car signals a shift in Mercedes-Benz’s naming strategy. The company is moving towards a more streamlined approach, where the “EQ Technology” suffix indicates an electric variant of a core model, rather than a separate sub-brand. This change aims to simplify the product lineup and make it easier for consumers to understand.
