The MG S5 EV has arrived in Australia as the much-anticipated successor to the popular ZS EV. Unlike the outgoing model, which was based on a platform originally designed for a petrol engine, the S5 EV is built on a dedicated electric vehicle architecture. This is the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that underpins the acclaimed MG4, giving the S5 EV a modern, ground-up design that maximizes space, performance, and efficiency.
Australian details and pricing have now been released, with the S5 EV available in two trim levels, Excite and Essence, and two different LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack options. This gives buyers a choice between a more affordable entry point and a longer-range option. All variants are rear-wheel drive, a setup that provides a fun and engaging driving experience.
- The entry-level Excite and Essence models come with a 49 kWh battery. This smaller battery offers a WLTP driving range of up to 410 km and a DC fast-charging speed of up to 120 kW.
- For those who need more range, the Excite and Essence can be optioned with a larger 62 kWh battery pack. This boosts the WLTP driving range to an impressive 515 km, with an increased DC fast-charging speed of up to 150 kW.
The S5 EV features numerous upgrades over the MG4, including a more spacious interior with a larger 453-litre boot, a five-link rear suspension for improved ride comfort, and a premium interior with a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen. The Essence variant adds even more luxury with a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a wireless phone charging pad.
With a starting price of around $40,490 before on-road costs, the MG S5 EV is positioned to be a serious competitor in the Australian electric SUV market, going head-to-head with rivals like the BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5. Its modern platform, competitive pricing, and a strong list of features make it a compelling new benchmark for affordable electric SUVs in Australia.
Australian details and pricing have now been released, with two different sized LFP battery packs available in either Excite or Essence trim levels. All MGS5 variants are rear-wheel drive only.
