Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. range is set to expand further in Australia with the long-awaited arrival of the ID.3. This compact electric hatchback, a spiritual successor to the Golf, has had its Australian launch delayed, but is now expected to arrive in 2025.

The ID.3 is built on Volkswagen’s dedicated MEB platform, and a facelifted version will be the first to arrive in Australia, ensuring local buyers get the most up-to-date technology and features. While specific Australian variants and pricing are still to be confirmed, we can expect a highly competitive lineup.

Overseas models give us a good indication of what to expect:

• ID.3 Pure: This entry-level model is expected to feature a 55 kWh gross battery pack, with a WLTP driving range of up to 434 km. It is also expected to be priced below $60,000, making it a serious contender in the affordable EV segment.
• ID.3 Pro: Moving up the range, the Pro variant will likely feature a 62 kWh gross battery pack, offering an impressive WLTP driving range of up to 559 km.
• ID.3 Pro S: For those who want more range, this variant is equipped with a larger 82 kWh gross battery pack, which boosts the WLTP driving range to an impressive 660 km.

In addition to the standard ID.3 variants, Volkswagen has also revealed a high-performance ID.3 GTX variant. This hot hatch version is a true enthusiast’s car, with a rear-wheel-drive powertrain that delivers a significant performance boost. It is expected to come with a larger 84 kWh gross battery pack and a motor that produces 240 kW of power and 545 Nm of torque. This will give it a blistering 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 5.6 seconds. The GTX variant is expected to arrive in Australia after the standard ID.3, possibly in early 2026.
