Tesla has announced the opening of its largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the Southern Hemisphere, located in the regional town of Goulburn, New South Wales. This significant development features a 20-stall Supercharger facility situated along the Hume Highway, approximately four kilometres from the existing eight-stall site on Sloane Street.

The new site, positioned adjacent to the iconic Big Merino, is open to all vehicles compatible with CCS2 charging standards. Tesla’s Country Director for Australia and New Zealand, Thom Drew, highlighted that the station is equipped with the latest V4 Supercharger technology, capable of delivering power at rates of up to 300kW. This upgrade ensures faster charging times for EV users making journeys between Sydney and Canberra, enhancing regional infrastructure to support Australia’s transition to electric mobility.

Pricing at the Goulburn Supercharger is competitive, with Tesla owners paying a reduced rate of $0.52 per kilowatt-hour compared to $0.73 for non-Tesla EV drivers. Additionally, Tesla implements an ‘idle fee’ of up to one dollar per minute for vehicles left plugged in after they are fully charged, encouraging efficient use of charging spots.

This expansion positions Goulburn as a key EV charging hub within the region, reflecting Tesla’s ongoing investment in Australia’s EV infrastructure. It surpasses the previous record held by a 16-stall site in Albury, which opened in December 2023.

Despite a slowdown in electric vehicle sales compared to 2023, demand remains robust. The Tesla Model Y continued to dominate the market in the first half of 2025, with nearly 48,000 EVs sold nationwide-accounting for 7.6 per cent of all new car sales. This trend underscores the sustained interest and viability of electric vehicles within Australia’s evolving automotive landscape.
